Berrisys is a sulfur dioxide (SO2) generating sheet of laminated plastic used for storing blueberries after harvesting and during long or short-term transportation. The use of sulfur dioxide is a cost-effective way to treat berries from fungal decay caused by Botrytis cinerea and Rhizopus stolonifer. Berrisys technology is an innovation of SO2 gas generation. Active ingredient is sealed in the wax matrix between the two thin plastic films that provides a better distribution. A gas gradually releases at levels capable of effective control over the fungus Botrytis cinerea and Rhizopus stolonifer development without aggravating other types of possible changes, maintaining the appearance and taste after several months of storage.
Unlike similar products on the market, the use of Berrisys sheets is absolutely safe, even after any possible damage during packaging or use – sulfur dioxide will not harm neither packers nor consumers. A slight loss of color is possible on damaged berries. The inert nonwoven layer in the sheet adheres to the underside of the Berrisys sheet being a barrier between berries and the active chemical.
Berrisys is prodused in batches, each sheet printed with a unique identification number. It guarantees the traceability of the quality that our customers expect from a modern high-tech product. It is worth to mention that the sheets are made on BRC-certified facility. Studies show that treating Berrisys (SO2-generating sheets) is the most efficient and practical among all existing options. Berrisys Dual Release

Berrisys Dual Release is used if blueberries have not been pre-treated with SO2. This sheet has two layers: Fast Release and Slow Release. Fast Release sterilizes blueberries releasing a sufficient dose of sulfur dioxide for 24-48 hours to kill and eliminate the presence of any actively developing spores of the fungi Botrytis cinerea and Rhizopus stolonifer. Slow Release stays active for 28 days, continuously releases a small dose of sulfur dioxide gas sufficiently concentrated to inhibit all the spores of Botrytis cinerea and Rhizopus stolonifer, but also it is quite low and the residues in the berries stays within allowed 10 ppm.

Recommendations:

  1. Pack the blueberries as soon as possible after harvesting, as the high temperature contributes to the rapid drying of the vegetables
  2. Do not pack damaged/crushed/wet berries.
  3. The recommended packing temperature of the vegetables is +20°C; stop if the temperature rises.
  4. Place the sheet on top of the berries with a non-woven side to berries and a shiny side to the box.
  5. If MAM (moisture-absorbing membrane) sheet or other absorbent material is used, place it on top of Berrisys.
  6. Place into a cold room (preferably forced air cooling) as soon as possible to minimize decay and loss of moisture.
  7. Best storage conditions are at -0.5-2 °C and 95% Relative Humidity.

Packing instruction:

  1. Cover a box with a bag to minimize moisture loss.
  2. Put the berries in the box.
  3. Place the sheet with a non-woven side to berries and a shiny side to the box.
  4. Close the bag with the Berrisys sheet and berries, secure this bag with tape and close the box. This ensures that SO2 will stay in the box.
