Uvasys was developed for all varieties of table grapes. It is long-lasting sulfur dioxide (SO2) generating sheet of laminated plastic.
Producers, wholesalers and retailers of table grapes worldwide recognize and highly appreciate this technology. The main function of the sheet is to protect the grapes from damage and loss of appearance caused by the pathogen Botrytis cinerea (gray mold). The unique and innovative construction of Uvasys sheets ensures steady release of sulfur dioxide (SO2) over a long period of time.
Apart from the advantage of maximum control over the growth of fungi, it also minimizing the sulfur dioxide damage to grapes (which is still possible only in case of violation of usage instructions).
Uvasys guarantees an excellent appearance of grapes after months of storage in cold stores and on supermarket/store shelves. These advantages are related to the use of a unique plastic and wax/sodium metabisulphite matrix laminating process and to the production process, which has strict specifications and quality control procedures. Uvasys is manufactured in a BRC certified facility. It was the first sulfur dioxide based product that gained this standard.
The use of the sheets is absolutely safe for both consumers and packers. In case of accidental damage, chemicals are not released from the sheet, because the active component is located in the wax matrix between two thin plastic films.
The inert non-woven layer adheres to the underside of the Uvasys sheet acting as a barrier between the grapes and the chemical, and providing improved protection of the grapes. According to our technology preserving effect of the sheet starts after packaging, in the refrigerator, and continues throughout the shelf life. Uvasys sheets are produced in batches.
Each batch has its own unique number, which is printed on all sheets. It provides full traceability, in accordance with our high standards. Current studies have shown that Uvasys is the most effective and practical method of treatment. These sheets allow to destroy and prevent Botrytis cinerea fungus development in all varieties of table grapes. Shelf life of the sheets with proper storage is more than two years.
  • Residual levels of sulphite in grapes are always low: <10 ppm.
  • Sheets can be taken out of the box just before use.

Uvasys Dual Release Green

The Uvasys Dual Release Green sheet is used if the grapes were not treated with SO2. It has two layers: Fast Release and Slow Release.
The Fast Release sterilizes table grapes, by releasing a large dose of sulphur dioxide over 24-48 hour period to kill and eliminate any actively growing Botrytis cinerea fungal spores.
The Slow Release layer remains active for up to 120 days, emitting a low, continual dose of sulphur dioxide gas, concentrated enough to inhibit any latent or inherent Botrytis cinerea spores from growing, but also low enough to ensure sulphite residues in table grapes remain safely below the legal limit of 10 ppm.

The product is available in different sizes, depending on the carton sizes used:

Uvasys Slow Release

A specialized version of Uvasys with only Slow Release layer. These sheets are designed for use in packaging facilities in which the grapes were pretreated with sulfur dioxide to kill and eliminate any actively growing Botrytis cinerea fungal spores.

The Uvasys Slow Release sheet remains active for up to 120 days, emitting a low, continual dose of sulphur dioxide gas, concentrated enough to inhibit any latent or inherent Botrytis cinerea spores from growing, but also low enough to ensure sulphite residues in table grapes remain safely below the legal limit of 10 ppm.

Recommendations:

  1. Pack the grapes as soon as possible after harvesting, as the high temperature contributes to the rapid drying of the stems and berries.
  2. Do not pack damaged/crushed/wet grapes.
  3. The recommended packing temperature of the fruit is +20°C; stop if the temperature rises.
  4. After rains it is recommended to stop packing for two days.
  5. Before using Uvasys, cool the grapes to +0.5-2 °C to prevent condensation on the berries.
  6. Use Uvasys sheets of the required size for boxes with different parameters and the appropriate type for different types of packaging.
  7. If MAM (moisture-absorbing membrane) sheet or other absorbent material is used, place it on top of Uvasys.
  8. Place the sheets on top of the grapes, a shiny printed side up.
  9. Observe the cold chain. Since the moment of harvesting till the putting packed grapes into refrigerator storage temperature should not increase, as this reduces the quality.
  10. Place into a cold room (preferably forced air cooling) as soon as possible to minimize decay and loss of moisture.
  11. Best storage conditions are at -0.5°C and 95% Relative Humidity

Packing instruction:

  1. Cover the box with a bag to minimize moisture loss.
  2. Put the grapes in the box.
  3. Place the Uvasys sheet on the grapes, the shiny printed side up.
  4. Close a bag with the Uvasys and grapes, secure this bag with tape and close the box. This ensures that SO2 stay in the box.
